Genesis and evolution of physical education and natural science in the Stanislaviv region: from the Austrian Enlightenment to interwar modernism (1800–1939)

Abstract

The article examines the genesis and development of physics and natural science education in the Stanislaviv region during 1800–1939. Based on the analysis of historical sources and educational practices, it is demonstrated that the formation of natural science education in the region began long before the Soviet period and was closely related to Austrian educational reforms and interwar modernization processes. The study outlines the key stages in the transformation of the educational system—from Jesuit colleges to state gymnasiums and specialized institutions—highlighting the emergence of experimental approaches to teaching physics, the development of material and technical infrastructure, and the contribution of academic and pedagogical elites. Particular attention is paid to the role of the Ukrainian State Gymnasium, real schools, the activities of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, and the observatory on Mount Pip Ivan as a center of high-altitude scientific research. It is argued that a significant part of this intellectual and institutional heritage was lost or marginalized due to the political transformations of the twentieth century. The study substantiates the continuity of natural science education in the region and its integration into the broader European scientific and educational context.
