Abstract

The article deals with the image, activity and social acceptance of people with disabilities. People with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to discrimination and social, occupational, economic and political exclusion. The disabled can not fully implement their professional, family, civic and personal passions. The publication presents limitations and barriers that disabled people face in their everyday functioning. Limitations in access to various types of resources, space and opportunities will be described. Internal and individual barriers will be presented, resulting from personal traits and predispositions of disabled people, as well as external environmental factors that architectural and urban barriers impose, as well as lack of access to the education, rehabilitation and social assistance system. Wrong attitudes of the environment towards people with disabilities that hinder their everyday functioning will be discussed. New IT technologies, methods and tools facilitating the functioning of disabled people and innovative ways of social and professional rehabilitation of this social group will be presented. Particularly noteworthy are the analysis of the relationship between quality of life and social relations, social support and the possibilities of using goods available to the general public. Determinants of the quality of life of people with disabilities are specific and often depend on social relations. The source of satisfaction in the lives of people with disabilities is the fact of being needed, and not only tolerated.
