ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS OF YAROSLAV PASTERNAK IN KRYLOS ON THE UKRAINIAN INTERWAR PRESS COVERS (PART 1)

Abstract

The localization of the foundation of the Halych Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin of the 12 th century, made by Yaroslav Pasternak in 1936–1937 in the village of Krylos is one of the most significant discoveries of Ukrainian archeology of the 20 th century. Sensational excavations of the famous Lviv scientist were noticeably reflected in the information space of that time. Numerous interviews and field reports from the 85-year-old scene are now a valuable source narrative for the interwar press. Due to the development of modern technologies, a significant part of the Ukrainian-language press of the 1930s was digitized on the platform «Libraria. Ukrainian online periodicals archive», as well as by means of «Polona», the Polish digital library». At the same time, most of the original newspapers and magazines are still located in the country’s archives, libraries and museums. In particular, the materials of the State Archives of Ivano-Frankivsk region were used during the preparation of the proposed series. In the first part, we offer three thematic publications, including personal reports of Dr. Yaroslav Pasternak («Novyi Chas» newspaper) and Prof. Dr. Volodymyr Zalozetskyi («Dilo» newspaper), as well as an interview with archaeologist Fedir Dudka («New Time») and Zenon Tarnavskyi («Ukrainian News»). Author’s articles, posts, reports and interviews are published in the original language with preserved spelling, possible typos and errors.
