Abstract

Fragments of the seal of the Master of the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem were found on the territory of the village of Krylos and in the vicinity of Volodymyr. In both cases, the part of the seal that contained the Master’s name was lost. This made it impossible to date it, and hence introduce this extraordinary sphragistic source into scientific circulation. As a result of the research, an analogue of the bull was found and its affiliation was established to Master Guеrin de Montaigu who ruled the Order from 1207 to 1228. These two seals are significant due to the same front sides and different reverse sides. This testifies to the fact that they were used in different albeit close chronological periods. At the same time, both seals represent the first sphragistic type of the Order’s seals, which was changed by Master Montaigu during his lifetime. This allows for a narrower dating of both copies during the
leadership of Master Montaigu over the Order. Both seals are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.
