THE NOBILITY OF THE HALYCH LAND AND THE CONGRESS IN HALYCH IN 1427

This article examines the participation of the Halych land nobility in the congress held on 28 June 1427 in Halych. The congress, attended by King Władysław II Jagiełło, also gathered the nobility of the Ruthenian royal domains. The king sought to secure oaths of allegiance regarding the succession of his sons. The most complete list of Halych nobility from that period comes from materials stored in the Crown Archives, compiled by Jan Zamoyski in the late 1560s. Several documents from that time show that 144 individuals represented the Halych lands – 34.4% of all attendees – a figure influenced by the proximity of the nobility to Halych. These documents reveal the division of the Galician lands into three counties: Halych, Terebovlia, and Kolomyia. The composition of the Halych nobility highlights nearly all landowners, often spanning two generations. Notably, many individuals present in 1427 would later become the first local officials following the extension of crown law into the Ruthenian lands. Overall, these events and preserved records offer a foundation for the most comprehensive study of the Crown nobility’s personal composition at the close of Władysław II Jagiełło’s reign, representing an early census of landowners in the king’s Ruthenian domain.
