This publication is a preliminary study that explores the possible presence of Prince Volodymyr Mstyslavovych in Halych. He was the son of the Prince of Kyiv, Mstyslav Volodymyrovych, and the grandson of Prince Volodymyr Vsevolodovych Monomakh. The author considers the information provided in the Kyiv Chronicle regarding Volodymyr Mstyslavovych stay in the capital of the Principality of Halych, recorded under the year 6682 (1174/1175), to be credible and attempts to determine when and under what circumstances this may have occurred. The author suggests that Volodymyr may have been in Halych during the height of his conflicts with Mstyslav Iziaslavovych, which took place in the years 1155–1156, 1159, and 1167–1168. The period of 1167–1168 is considered the least likely, as sources indicate that during this time the prince was present in Trypillia, Vyshhorod, the Pechersk Monastery, Kotelnytsia, among the Berendey, and in Suzdal, Ryazan, Polonne, Dorohobuzh, and among the Polovtsy. Moreover, in 1167–1168, the Prince of Halych, Yaroslav Volodymyrovych, was actively supporting Mstyslav Iziaslavovych and would have been unlikely to host Volodymyr Mstyslavovych at his court. Dating Volodymyr’s stay in Halych to the year 1159 is also considered improbable, since at that time he was supporting the enemies of the prince of Halych. According to the author, Volodymyr Mstyslavovych journey to the capital of the Principality of Halych most likely occurred during the initial stage of his conflict with Mstyslav Iziaslavovych. However, this could not take place in 1155, when Volodymyr’s position was still relatively strong. It appears more likely that this happened only after his expulsion from the Principality of Volodymyr in 1156 and his unsuccessful attempt to regain his former possessions in Volhynia at the end of 1156 or the beginning of 1157. At that moment, finding himself in a difficult situation and without allies, the prince may have sought refuge in Halych. The author suggests that Volodymyr Mstyslavych may have remained at the court of Halych until 1158. The proposed dating is presented as a working hypothesis.
