У статті запропоновано нову інтерпретацію так званих анжуйської, нормандської, аквітанської та англійської імперій як композитних монархій. Оригінальність дослідження полягає в деконструкції усталених історіографічних міфологем та критичному перегляді застосування понять «держава» й «імперія» до реалій ХІ–ХІІІ ст. Метою статті є реконструкція структури та механізмів функціонування володінь Анжуйської династії та з’ясування їхньої відповідності концептам «композитної монархії» та персональної унії. Методологія ґрунтується на принципах історичного конструктивізму, компаративному та структурному аналізі, а також на підходах нової політичної історії та інтелектуальної історії. Основні результати показують, що влада в середньовіччі здійснювалася над людьми, а не над територіями; королівська влада була формою сеньйоріальної, а політичні утворення – композитними, з мінливою конфігурацією прав і лояльностей. У результаті доведено, що володіння Плантагенетів становили мережу персональних і родинних зв’язків, а не цілісну «державу» в модерному розумінні. Перспективи дослідження включають розширення порівняльних студій для українського матеріалу та переосмислення концепту «держави Романовичів» у термінах персональної унії. Практичне значення полягає в уточненні категоріального апарату української медієвістики та критичному осмисленні впливу модерних політичних понять на інтерпретацію минулого.
