The article analyzes the journalistic works of the second half of the XIX – early XX centuries, devoted to the most important problems of the national and cultural movement of Ukrainians in Halychyna. The aim of the article is to reveal the views of leading scientists, writers, artists, public, cultural and political figures on the most pressing issues of Ukrainian cultural life and to follow the transformation of the national-cultural movement of Ukrainians in Halychyna into a national liberation. Among the most frequently raised issues in the pages of journalistic publications – the use of the Ukrainian language in everyday life, national education, science, literature, theater, music, fine arts and more. With the help of source criticism we tried to find out the objective-subjective information potential of journalistic works of Ukrainian, Polish and Russian public and cultural figures and politicians, which allowed to reconstruct various aspects of the national-cultural movement of Ukrainians in Halychyna during the second half of the XIX – early XX century. Hermeneutics, as the art of correctly understanding the language of another person, in particular the written text, was also important for the analysis of the works of participants in the national-cultural movement. We were able to establish that in the late nineteenth – early twentieth century there is a steady tendency to politicize the Ukrainian national-cultural movement and transform it into a national liberation movement. This affected the works of public figures of this time (Yu. Bachynsky, L. Vasylevsky, S. Lyudkevych, I. Trush, I. Franko and others), where it is emphasized that only the political independence of Ukrainians can be a prerequisite for solving all the most pressing problems, including cultural. Such a worldview approach is of great social importance in the conditions of the modern hybrid Russian-Ukrainian war, when the struggle for Ukrainian statehood continues.
