Abstract

The purpose of scientific research is to systematize and critically analyze sources on the history of the activities of Ukrainian pedagogical societies of Galicia and Bukovina in the 80s of the 19th early 20th centuries. The research methodology is based on the principles of a scientific, comprehensive, systemic and holistic approach to the analysis of source material. To achieve the set goal, the methods of source analysis and synthesis, classification and typology, textual analysis, historical-genetic, historical-comparative were applied. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that a holistic source complex on the history of the activities of teachers‟ societies of Galicia and Bukovina was formed, its classification was made, and a number of non- updated sources were introduced into scientific circulation.

In the process of studying the specified issues, we identified and analyzed the following groups of sources: 1) normative (national and regional legislative acts and statutes that regulated the work of pedagogical associations); 2) official documents (materials of the Galician Governorate, the Bukovina Regional Administ- ration, the Regional School Councils of Galicia and Bukovina, and other official institutions that directly or indirectly influenced the activities of educational societies); 3) statistical (materials of national and regional statistics and reports on the activities of pedagogical societies); 4) materials of periodicals (containing mea- ningful editorial articles and informational messages about the activities of Ukrainian pedagogical societies of Galicia and Bukovina); 5) sources of personal origin (autobiographies, memoirs, and letters of mainly influen- tial public and cultural figures and politicians). The classification of the source complex into five groups can be considered as a conditional rating of the informativeness of the sources and the reliability of the information contained in them. We believe that the application of the proposed classification scheme will help researchers continue their further search for sources and fill in the gaps in the study of the specified issues.
