Abstract

The article examines the phenomenon of Ukrainian school education in the United States as a result of the activities of various waves of emigration aimed at preserving the national identity, language and culture of Ukrainians overseas. Special attention is paid to the figure of Maria Kitsiuk, a Ukrainian-American teacher, public figure, and long-time director of the School of Ukrainian Studies in Yonkers (New York). Based on materials from the diaspora press (“Svoboda”, “Surma”, “Ridna Shkola”), her contribution to the development of Ukrainian studies education, pedagogical principles and approaches to teaching language and literary disciplines are highlighted.

The main methodological principles of Maria Kitsiuk's scientific thinking are analyzed, in particular her orientation towards national-patriotic education, integration of Ukrainian cultural heritage into the educational process and formation of students' civic consciousness. The aim of the study is to introduce Maria Kitsiuk's name into the circle of scientific studies on the history of Ukrainian education in the diaspora and to understand her pedagogical heritage in the context of modern educational practices.
