The article proposes the method of slow reading as an important factor in the analysis of Vasyl Stefanyk's short story «News». The effectiveness of its use in clarifying the ideological and aesthetic essence of the work of the classic of Ukrainian literature is proven: its imagery, character development, plot structure, compositional structure, etc. However, the article is aimed not only at this, but also at the need to develop modern literary education in secondary and higher schools of Ukraine. In this way, the functioning and interaction of three basic competencies are ensured when studying a literary work, in particular those defined by the curriculum of Vasyl Stefanyk’ «News», –to understand, be able to analyze and reproduce the literary text yourself. Actually, this is the main goal of the article. Therefore, its novelty lies in the fact that, along with other methods in the analysis of Vasyl Stefanyk’s novella «News», another method of its study is proposed – the method of slow reading, which is quite relevant in modern educational activities for both schoolchildren and philology students, as well as for teachers of secondary and higher education. Its theoretical and methodological results can be used in Ukrainian literature lessons, during lectures and practical classes for students. This determines the practical significance of the article.
