Abstract

Aim The article is dedicated to the study of Italian culture reception in Sviatoslav Hordynsky’s works. The aim of the paper is to elucidate the works of the artist in the context of Ukrainian-Italian cultural relations.

Methods The basis of the study is intertextual approach which have caused the employment of biographical, cultural-historical, comparative, hermeneutic methods. The artistic aspect has been revealed by way of intermedial methodology appliance.

Results The various forms of Sviatoslav Hordynsky’s reception of Italian literature and art have been examined in the paper. Hordynsky’s non-fiction (art history articles, papers on journeys in Italy, reviews) have been taken into account. The poetics of «Italian Verses» cycle and «Rome Iambi» cycle has been analyzed. Special emphasis has been placed on the translation of the sonnet by Michelangelo. An Italian art served as a benchmark for Hordynsky for which he verified his own creative development and the correspondence to his time.

Scientific novelty For the first time the «Italian texts» by Sviatoslav Hordynsky have been regarded in the light of literature and art correlation.

The practical significance The article may serve for the further analysis of Sviatoslav Hordynsky’s works. The results of the research can be used for the study of interart comparisons problems and universalistic artists’ creative work.
