The Significance of Mykhailo Pavlyk´s Translation of Władysław Reymont’s Novel «Chłopi» in his Creative Legacy and in the History of Ukrainian–Polish Literary Relations

The article is focused on the translation of the novel «Mużyky» («Chłopi») by the renowned Polish writer Władysław Reymont, carried out by the Galician writer, public figure, and translator Mykhailo Pavlyk. Reymont’s work «Chłopi» brought him worldwide fame and the Nobel Prize. Objective. To introduce readers to the unique translation of the novel «Chłopi» by the renowned Polish writer Władysław Reymont, rendered by the Galician translator and literary critic Mykhailo Pavlyk. This distinctive translation has not lost its relevance today and remains of significant interest to researchers of the works of both W. Reymont and M. Pavlyk. Research Methodology. A historical-literary and linguistic comparative analysis of the original and its translation enables a deeper understanding of the wide range of techniques used by the translator to convey folkloric details and dialectal features. Results and Scientific Novelty. The main principles of Mykhailo Pavlyk’s translational practice are sufficiently representative and demonstrate his distinctive approach to rendering monumental literary works. Practical Significance. The article may be used to study Mykhailo Pavlyk’s individual translational style, as well as the specific features involved in translating works rich in dialectal elements and folkloric characteristics.
